Many of you will be aware of the horror that’s currently going on at the US border at the moment, with young children of asylum seekers being torn away from their families. If you’re not aware of what’s going on, you might read: https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2018/06/usa-family-separation-torture/
Losing Frida is the thing that scares me the most in this world. The idea that families have put themselves in grave danger to seek asylum and then have their children torn away from them and locked up in cages (no, I’m not exaggerating) with no idea where they are or if they will ever see them again, often being moved across the country with no system in place to communicate with them, is monstrous and inhuman. Children belong with their families, parents belong with their children. I cannot imagine the terror and pain those families are going through at the hands of the US authorities. And it’s going on right now.
I know there are many, many injustices and atrocities going on in this world at the moment, and many causes to donate to. But if you feel you can and wish to, you might consider donating to a charity taking action on the ground to support these families. Because although anger and voicing our anger is important, money can make a tangible difference.
Below are some charities you may like to consider donating to who are all working tirelessly to help these families. We have personally donated to a couple of them, but all look worthy of financial support:
RAICES Family Reunification Fund
Act Blue (this is great if you can’t decide who to donate to as they split your donation between a number of charities)
If you’re not able to donate personally, then please consider raising awareness and sharing these organisations with others who might be in a position to do so.
I have said before that I believe raising our children peacefully, with respect, empathy and compassion triumphing over control and conformity, has the potential to be one of the most profoundly radical acts of social change.
Let us keep raising children who will refuse to stand for these horrors when it’s their generation in charge.
