A couple of months ago we started using a perpetual calendar, after Frida was showing a growing interest in the months of the year and in reading numbers higher than 10. I was a bit hesitant about buying one, but in the end I decided to go for it and I’m so glad I did. Changing it each day has become a treasured ritual and part of our morning rhythm, and it has also brought beauty into our home – something I am all for!

The perpetual calendar we use is by Grapat, and can be found in the UK from most ethical toys stockists; my favourites are Little Acorns To Mighty OaksConscious CraftMyriad, and BabiPur)

Our morning rhythm

Every morning at the moment Frida is eager to jump out of bed and go straight to open her advent calendar. It’s cold though, and our floors are draughty, so she wriggles on some socks and slippers and a dressing gown before heading downstairs. We chose to buy her a picture calendar this year rather than chocolate or toys, and it has been such a joy to witness her excitement each morning as she rushes to find out what picture will be under the day’s door. Once she is done, we change the date on our perpetual calendar (and the month if needed). Throughout each season we also slowly change the “treasures” in the little wooden bowl to reflect the nature that is outside around us. We also change the little peg dolls we use to represent the days of the week (not pictured in this post but you can see what I’m talking about here). Frida will then change the weather on her weather wheel. I light some candles, play some soft music, and put the stovetop kettle on, and we slowly settle into our day by read poetry and books over a breakfast of porridge, eggs, or toast.

Our weekly rhythm at the moment is less predictable than it was a few weeks ago – my husband is studying at the moment, and doing more childcare whilst I am working more – so these small daily rhythms are even more precious to us. I am so grateful for our strong morning and evening rhythms and rituals to keep us all grounded and connected, whichever parent is around more that day.
