Each morning, Frida and I gather for morning time over breakfast. We read poetry, learn about artists, listen to beautiful music, read nature books, learn languages, and so much more. One of my favourite parts of morning time is learning, singing, and reciting some seasonal songs and verses.

With the current big shifts in the world around us, many of us will be spending more time indoors, so I thought I would share some of my favourite spring verses in case you’re looking for something to brighten your mornings (and if you’re in the Southern hemisphere, here are some for autumn).

Some of these I sing or tell alone, some I use actions, and some we might act out with little figures. I’ll leave it up to you to decide how to use them!

Spring time garden

I ask Frida to recite this to me every morning, and she’s started using it as her hand washing song (x2).

In my spring time garden

Rosy morning glow

Sunshine calling, falling, calling

Seedlings wake and grow

Listen to this here (we sing a slightly different tune but this was all I could find).

A little seed

A sweet little finger play for gardening:

A little seed for me to sow, a little earth to make it grow,

A little hole, a little pat, a little wish, and that is that.

A little sun, a little shower,

A little wish, and then… a flower!

I don’t sing this, but rather we say it with actions. It’s such a lovely, simple fingerplay for young children!

This is a house…

Talking of finger plays, I love this one for young children.

This is a nest for a robin, (make a cup shape with your hands)

This is a hive for a bee, (put two fists together to make a hive)

This is a hole for a rabbit, (put your index fingers and thumbs together to make a hole)

And this is a house for me. (make a roof over your head)

A nest is a home for a robin, (as before)

A hive is a home for a bee, (as before)

A hole is a home for a rabbit, (as before)

But a house is a home for me! (as before)

I know a little pussy

The sweetest little spring song:

I know a little pussy, her coat is pearly grey

She lives down in the meadow, not very far away

But though she is a pussy, she’ll never be a cat

For she’s a pussy willow, now what do you think of that?

Miaow, miaow, miaow, miaow, miaow!

Listen to this here (this is the version our old Waldorf group leader used to sing) or here (a little easier to sing).

Spring is coming

I love this one, we’re currently learning it:

Spring is coming, spring is coming, birdies build your nest,

Weave together straw and feather, doing each your best.

Spring is coming, spring is coming, flowers are coming too,

Pansies, lilies, daffodillies, now are coming through.

Spring is coming, spring is coming, all around is fair,

Shimmer, glimmer on the meadow, joy is everywhere.

Listen to this here or here (this second one is the version we’re more familiar with, but I love how these folk songs always have variations!)

May Day song

This never fails to put a smile on my face. So jolly!

Good morning lords and ladies, it is the first of May!

We hope you’ll view our garland, it is so bright and gay,

For it is the first of May, oh it is the first of May!

Remember lords and ladies, it is the first of May!

We gathered them this morning, all in the early dew,

And now bring their beauty and fragrance all for you.

For it is the first of May, oh it is the first of May!

Remember lords and ladies, it is the first of May!

The cuckoo comes in April, it sings its song in May,

In June it changes tune, and then it flies away.

For it is the first of May, oh it is the first of May!

Remember lords and ladies, it is the first of May!

And now you’ve seen our garland, we must be on our way,

Remember lords and ladies, it is the first of May!

For it is the first of May, oh it is the first of May!

Remember lords and ladies, it is the first of May!

Listen to this here.

Wishing you a healthy, happy spring. Love, Eloise xx

One thought on “Some sweet spring verses

  1. Thank you so much for sharing! My little girl is loves My Autumn Garden (and was singing it just today), so she will be really pleased to know there is a springtime one :). We are also big fans of Elizabeth Mitchell songs! I play them if I’m ever in a bad mood, as a good song and dance with my daughters to her lovely songs never fails to cheer me up.
